Digital Technologies

New Technologies

LongWave: This term is to do with the radio spectrum, this refers to the length of the wave length. in this case its long. This just basically means the distance the wave is apart from one another.
LongWaved radio started in the 1940s.

MediumWave: This term is to do with the radio spectrum, this refers to the length of the wave length. in this case its medium.

ShortWave: This just means that the distance between te wave lengths are short, and not as long as the other ones.

The strength of these signals are dffret between the times of the day due to enviromental issues.

Amplitude Modulation: AM was a form of radio that was popular in the 19

Freqence Modulation: FM raido waves ae better that medium radio waves becuase they are closer together, this means more wave can be transmittid quicker. this means th quaity of the file transmitted is alot better. FM radio started in the 1980s.

Distribution Technologies

Radio station broadcast there content through a set of frequencies, and this is how they are picked up on the other side of the transmission. they signal sends out a set of 1's and 0's this set of numbers are transformed on the other side into what they originally were. they transmit these through something called an antenna.
The radio areal, normally on-top of or very close to the main office, broadcast radio waves with in a certain broadcasting distance. this is because some broadcasting company's are only allowed to distribute there content in a small area, or even a large area there is always a point to where they cant broadcast anymore.

Podcasts:
Podcasts are a specific type of 'digital media'. this means they can be distributed via many different things. these  things are audiovideoPDF, and ePub. Podcasts are usually broadcasted through the web, but can be streamed on portable media players (e.g Ipods).

Iplayer:
an Iplayer is a device that has content already pre-loaded onto it. these can be many different things like TV shows or Music Or sometimes radio broadcasts that aren't streamed live. Iplayer was formally named Realplayer, up in-till they started loading content that has already been displayed onto it. The term Iplayer has been shortened. the full term is BBC-Iplayer. This is because it was created by the major company The BBC.

Content distribution from independent producers to radio stations via broadband:
The Content distribution from independent producers to radio stations via broadband means the way they content made by the independent producers are sent via the web to radio stations.
Independent radio stations use secure things like email to send: radio shows, jingles or adverts. they do this because radio stations pay the independent company's to create these so that they dont have to, this means its alot cheaper and easyer and cheaper.

Reception Platforms

Terrestrial reception:
Terrestrial reception is means how we receive our radio broadcasts. this is normally received thought TV dishes or anteaters on the actually device. then this is transformed back into the original sound and played through out speakers. basically with out this we couldn't pick up the transition given out by the radio company and we would never be able to transform the signal into the sound that we hear.

Satellite reception:
Satellite reception is where the transmission from the radio station is sent to a satellite in outer space and is then sent to out homes. This usually requires a subscription. A certain sort of areal dish is needed in order for us to pick up this signal, normally our sky dish. but there are other ways of picking up foreign channels.

Streaming:
Streaming to me is where something is sent out via web or transmission.and can be picked up. but also this means where something is constantly showed and available for a certain period of time(usually until they stop streaming it).

On-Demand Radio:
On-Demand Radio is where a radio broadcast can be listened to after it has been aired(E.G. Streamed on a Iplayer).

Radio changed for listeners?
Radio used to be only available through specific radio instruments. but with the evolve of technology radio had become a lot easier to listen to. now you can listen to radio on almost every technological device.

Normal Radio:
Normal radio has changed a lot for the listeners because you can now interact with the stations via computers, laptops, tablets and phones. this means the audience is more interactive with the stations making the radio a lot more popular. this also means that games and other entertaining things can now happen. Also the use of televisions in this new era can be used to listen to the radio. this means you don't have to have a radio player in order to listen the the radio. With the use of the web you can view the radio station producers making the radio station though live streaming.
